Steam "an evocative tribute to the last days of steam trains" by Colin Garratt
джиджаво книжле  :yahoo:

Beginning in the late sixties, Colin Garratt made it his mission to photograph steam locomotives wherever he could find them. He is an outstanding photographer and brave too, because sometimes he would stand right inside a tunnel to capture just the right shot as a train approached at high speed. Maybe it's not as brave as war photographers or soldiers sometimes have to be, but it's far braver than most people would do.

In this book, the author captures the last days of steam in Britain, France, Germany and other European countries, then goes on to do the same in Central and South America, Africa and Asia. Sadly, steam trains in commercial services were already consigned to history by the time that Colin started his work, so there aren't any pictures from there, but American-built steam locomotives survived elsewhere long after they were no longer required in their homeland. One of their last strongholds was Cuba, which had imported plenty of American-built locomotives prior to Castro's revolution. Some of them were still working, by then confined to industrial services, at the start of the new millennium.

All most of the pictures here show steam locomotives in all their majesty, there are a few pictures showing abandoned, rusting locomotives, including three locomotives sent to Alaska during the gold rush but abandoned over a century ago. Slowly rusting and even more slowly dissolving, their remains will take many thousands of years to vanish if left as they are. Even more extraordinary are the two broad-gauge locomotives rusting away in the Azores. It seems that there was an attempt to bring one of them back to Britain for restoration, but this didn't happen.

Steam's last stronghold was China, where they have plentiful coal supplies and continued building steam locomotives for mainline services until the mid-nineties. The Chinese eventually realized the commercial reality that while steam locomotives are cheaper to build, easier to maintain and more robust than diesel and electric locomotives, their much higher running costs outweigh such advantages for commercial services.

Yes, steam locomotives are much more exciting than their replacements could ever be, but they had to be replaced. Fortunately, Colin and others recorded their exploits for posterity. Also some people spent a lot of time, effort and money preserving a few of them, which we can all see on heritage railways or in museums.

In summary, this book chronicles the demise, in pictures, of steam locomotives around the world, beginning with the end of mainline British steam in 1968, and it does that job well.
